Telephone Scams...

United States
December 20, 2006 8:29pm CST
So here it is 8 pm and the phone rings. Caller id say - Annonymous. So I decide it's christmas, why not take the risk!? I pick up the phone and say, "hello?". There is that delay, you know, the one that lets you know it's a telemarketer. I say hello again,(big mistake) and then I hear a man say my name; I ask who is calling. so he tells me his name and who he is calling with and I say, "what can I do for you?". He say my name again, asking if that is who is talking to. I say yes, what can I do for you? He is very persistant about getting a polite greeting from me and I am not bugding. Finally he tells me that he is with the trooper asscociation and begins to ask me how much he can expect me to donate towards helping needy families during the holidays. I asked him, how can I get on the list to get help too. He said he doesn't know about that, but he could put me down for 30 - 25 dollars. Finally I decide to to cut the guy lose. I said look I have no money... can't even buy gifts for my family. And his reply... Well, we can except a $20 donation. I could not believe this guy. I responded,"did you hear me? I can't even afford gifts for my family!". Okay here's the kicker... he responded,"Okay, so I'll put you down for $10...(click)" that is when I hung up the phone. I realize that he is probably doing his job, but come on, No means freakin No! I am so tired of being hit up for money every time I turn around.

i work in a call centre, and in india... i am sure many people are going to hate me for that... but let me tell you that the call you got was illegal.. you should have got the telephone no on caller id. verify with your telephone dept if you have any doubt. it is required because some people are in the DNC list, and if they get any such calls then they can complain and sue the company. and the director of the company can go to prison if the call goes to someone who is on DNC list. so yes, you are right. it was a scam. oh btw, i am not calling anyone, but i am taking calls for a company. i do customer support. so dont ask me whether i had called you to sell you something... ;-)

Even on the Do Not Call list there are some exceptions. I think its alright if they are a non-profit organization.

The thing is, some of the Trooper calls are scams too. Its really hard to know nowdays. We're even on the national "Do Not Call" list. I just say that I don't donate to phone calls and hang up.

Yup, that's what I do to. It's very frustrating though when they are calling constantly.

these calls are not always annoying... why are people afraid of even attending these calls, if you dont want what they are selling or talking about you can always hang up and ask them to not to call back again and they obviously wont cuz they dont want to waste their time.... the only thing i noticed is people are stupid enough that they think if they are going to attend these calls they are going to be fooled by the telemarketer... BE SMART, you should atleast have guts to talk to anyone, and if its something good u should go for it... but people are usually not confident upon theirselves and they think once they pick up the phone they are going to be fooled.

YOu know it's not his fault but he should get the point from what you said, that's happened to me before and I've just hung up, sometimes it's the best thing to do.

Wow! Now I'm really glad to live in Germany! lol Things like that are not allowed here. You can be called for a survey or they can try to sell something to you when you own a business, but calling people up to ask them to donate money is definitely not allowed! :D

That sounds weird because usually telemarketers(if thats how you spell it) aren't allowed to call your home after eight o'clock. So next time the call tell them that you think they are scamming you and that you are going to call the police station to put something on your phone and next time they call they will get caught. This is kinda weird though because the same thing has been happening to my cousin. I hate phone calls like that, I keep getting phone calls from some place trying to get me to take a survey and half the time I would be polite and take it but I can never understand thhe person and when I ask them to repeat themselves they get and attitude(how rude they interrupted my day) so I jus hang up. LOL
