Well its very common in tribal areas or villages that they marry young girls with old men just because instead of paying penalties to their waderah (It is the boss or the head of their village). These penalties are also set on foolish things they don't have any thing to do with crime or bad doings.
If a poor person can't pay these penalties to waderahs, the Waderah weds with the daughter of that poor man no matter how old the waderah is and whats the age of the girl.
This think is very common in villages of south asia.

im in England, and from my cultural position this practice disgusts me, a man going anywhere near a child would be called a piedophile and locked in prison for a long long time,

That is true, he would be looked as a pedophile here in the united states. I have read such things happening in other countries in the past but not recently.

This is sad out of the eye of a westener. These people and their culture this is not a shock as his is the way they were brought up and they are quite happy with that as this is all they know and then automatically it is normal for them. They have nothing to compare standards to. If you ask any anthropologist, they will explain this easier. Read any anthripologist books and understand it. According to most of these people they have never seen any other living been in this world. Who must they test their standards against. Dont understand me wrong, I dont agree with this at all and would not vote for it to ever happen but we must also understand why they doe this and not condemn them for their actions.

hey polachicago. hadn't it even occured to you that your friend in pakistan does not know everything, i mean EVERYTHING, that happens in his country? i'm from asia and i KNOW that this happens here in my country. we have different cultures in different countries, and if you cannot accept the fact that things like this actually happen somewhere around the world, that only shows how closed-minded you are. things like this DO happen so don't go accusing somebody of sounding like an old pervert when all they want to do is talk about different cultures.

Tell me what you will do if you fall in love with a 50 year old person.I don't think it's a crime.Yes it is a crime if parents sell their daughter to an old person.

Well, something of this nature also happens in some areas in Nigeria. But not really as payment for penalty but as a token of friendship or good gesture. The only difference is that the father of the little bride can pledge her daughter to his friend or the son of his friend just to keep the friendship tie very strong. Again, the little bride witll not be given out in marriage untill she passes her first peiod. But I guess this tradition is fast becoming a history except in villages where the social setting is very high.
