What do you think about dress codes being imposed in educational institutions that violate a person's personal or religious preferences? Some colleges in India do not allow girls to wear jeans. A school in France did not allow a girl to enter because of her scarf. Earlier in the UK, Sikhs had to fight for their right to wear their turbans. The authorities have their reasons for imposing the ban. What do you feel is the right thing to do?

I welcome the dress code. When you are in Rome you should be a Roman. When we talk a lot about our culture we must also know to respect the culture of others. You cannot stray and stand out like a sore thumb among a uniformly dressed crowd in the guise of culture. You must know to rise to the occasion. They hate the oddly dressed people the way we hate a shabby hippie entering our temple. And there is a misconception in our mind that western dress is reveling and sexy which is grossly wrong. Moreover our teenagers tend to overdo everything because of their ignorance and age.So the dress code is absolutely essential.Dress makes the man.

I was mainly referring to dress codes (like uniforms) in educational institutions.

I like the a dress code. children are not feeling bad because they can't afford those costly jeans and sneakers. yet if you an young adult paying thousand and thousands of dollars to go to school, as long as you don't come naked who cares what you have on. by that time it is all about the learning.

I can understand the point of dress codes and, in general, I support them. I do think they need to make exceptions for religious and cultural beliefs though, especially if you accept students from other countries.

according to me dress code at the school level is absolutely fine. But at the college level student should have the liberty to dress their own way.Though the students should keep in mind the need of the situation and dress accordingly.Authorities should not impose ban that violates a person's personal or religious preference.Everybody has the right to dress according to their religious preference. And I don't think that a person's dress would have any effect on the education of other students in the institution.Therefor one should be allowed to wear according to one's own choice.

Don't you feel that even at the college level some dress sense should prevail? Like..no exposing and stuff like that? Or do you feel that at that age, students are mature enough to choose what they wear and what they are exposed to?

I support dress codes in schools as a whole because it removes class from the equation. The last thing you need are the children of wealthy families looking down on the children on not so wealthy families bacause they can't aford to wear designer clothing.... But schools do however need to be tolerant and understanding of religious customs and reasonings etc There will always be a happy medium.....

Yes, when I was in school, we had a uniform though we could wear any kind of shoes. I remember kids who would wear Nike shoes would look down upon the rest of the kids who couldn't afford them. I think the uniform helps them not to get distracted by unnecessary stuff like who has more money and instead concentrate on all aspects of education.
