Eyes Wide Shut?

How often do you truly look? We see waht is happening around us everyday but how often do you truly look with eyes open? Or would we rather just shut out the evil and despair that seems to permeate with such intensity in this world. Famine, war, animal abuse, murder. We see soup kitchens over run by homeless people. Everywhere we look on the news, in the papers or on the radio there is this constant flow of ill corrupting daily life. Terrorist threats, green house effect, and the all mighty dollar. Society has become one of a disposable stance. Elders are thrown into nursing homes and often times forgotten why would things be different with pets and even babies? It's been read in newspapers of newborns being found abandoned in garbage cans by their parents. I think we have become preoccupied with the rush of a fast paced life we often simply shut out what is around us that can slow us down. In the process of looking but not really seeing we also miss the beauty this world has to offer in our daily lives. Avoidance of the reality about us creates a bubble we live in; one that helps us avoid the truth. Do we really want to live our lives avoiding what is right in front of our eyes? Everything has two sides; two sides to create balance. I choose eyes wide open to the true reality we live in.
