I LOVE American Pit Bull Terriers. If they are bred right & raised right, they are awesome dogs. I have 4 of them & I wouldn't trade them for anything. The problem is, when these dogs are bred wrong (mixed with other dogs with bad temperaments) & the fact that there are so many other breeds of dogs that look like APBT's but aren't & those breeds of dogs aren't bred to be as good with people as APBT's are. People just need educated on this breed. They really are great dogs.

it's all in how you raise them. i cant stress that enough. either you are over exagerating on how bad ur neighbors dogs are and you really are a hater of dogs or you have never owned a dog of any nature before. i have to admit it, i was scared to get a big dog because i had been bitten by 4 dogs before but they were all small. one caused me to get reconstuctive surgery on my ankle because it totally ripped the back of my ankle apart. in my opinion, little dogs tend to bite more because they are in fear of people because people we are bigger then them. i now own a boxer, lab, pitbull mix. 70 lb beautiful dog. she is so well behaved that i dont even have to hold her leash and she listens to comands without any formal training. she will not even go after other dogs while i am not holding the leash. pitbulls and boxers are very much alike but no one will say boxers are vicious. only pit bulls. she has had many of dogs not like her, so i asked the vet y this could be because she just wants to play. he said because her chest plate is huge and both boxers and pitbulls have huge chest plates compared to most other dogs. when she gets into her stance to play she sticks her chest out like all pit bulls and boxers do when they want to play. that in turn offends the other dog and they get defensive which inturn will cause a confrentation between the 2 and it always will get blamed on the bigger or more feirce looking dog. i now make her lay down and stay and she lets the other dog check her out first. now they all play nicely even the two pound dog next door. i have 2 kids that were only 2 and 4 when we got her as a puppy. she acts like another mother to them even though she has never had her own and doesnt know what motherhood is.

Yeah, I think it should be considered because they can be very dangerous.

They are dangerous when the OWNER trains them that way. Any dog can be dangerous--I'm more scared of little dogs than a German Shepard. It's all in how they're raised.

I don't subscribe to this point of view. In my country pitbulls are banned. They were bred to fight and they are aggressive in their nature. They have the potential to kill a person. © ronaldinu 2008

No, I don't think they should be. People put a label on pit bulls because of their reputation and claim it's for many different reasons. I've heard that they can turn, their natural instinct is to fight, they are dangerous and in my opinion, all dogs are like that. It all depends on how the dog was raised and what it's been exposed to! I am a proud owner of a pit bull and I can honestly say that it's the best dog that we've ever owned!

I am PIT BULL owner to I have a 6 year old, 3 year old and a 4 month old. She is the best family pet I have ever had. I am very fed up with everybodys bad comments especialy the news reports. And the stupid people that raises there pit bulls to fight and to be mean they would not be that way unless the owners made them that way. I would not change the bread of dog she is. Also I have a yorkie and a cat and my yorkie is the dominant one of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started a discussion tonight regarding people judging a large group of dogs and went on to compare it to racism, it really isn't all that different if you ask me. Lets just say that statistics show that white males are usually the ones who rob banks and so everyone starts to see white males as bad people, that's being racist. A similar situation for a pitbull who attacks a person and everyone assuming that all pitbulls are bad, same thing isn't it? I most certainly do not think pitbulls should be banned, but just like with every other breed they have certain living conditions that need to be met.

I have to agree with the racism comment - completely. Why should innocent dogs with RESPONSIBLE humans pay the price for the folks that beat, neglect, starve, fight and chain their dogs. ANY dog can be vicious if you treat them this way every single day. And the media! Dog attacks are ALWAYS blamed on pits. Then it comes out later that it wasn't actually a pit. Or it was a "pit bull type" dog. Do you know how many dogs sometimes look like pits? Did you ever hear about the Pomeranian that KILLED a SIX WEEK OLD BABY? No... As for the pits chewing through a bathroom window, chewing everything in sight, etc., you have to give them something to DO - pits are a working breed. They need exercise and they need to exercise their jaws. Giving dogs something to do and providing exercise goes for ANY breed. With boredom comes destruction. I do not have a pit in my family - yet. But, I am heavily involved in pit rescue. They are the most abused and misaligned breed in the world. They were NEVER bred to attack humans. So, instead of blaming the dogs, who don't you look to the people. And do a little research on the breed. Look at some photos of them being starved, hung, spray-painted, mutilated, beaten with 2x4s, burned, stabbed, bait dogs missing most of their face - yes, pits are used as bait dogs, too - and then tell me what kind of effect that has on you.

I do think the pit bulls have been given a bad rap. And, I do not think they should be banned. I personally have not owned a pit bull, but I have a cousin who owns two of them and has had them for several years along with her 5 year old son who plays with them everyday. I had a chihuahua previously that was more viscious and did more damage on humans than those pittys ever did. Before I got him, he had a previous owner that beat him and thought it was funny to aggravate him to the point of getting him to bite his owner. This trait instilled in the poor little guys head and in all the years I owned him, you never knew when he was cuddling with you if he was going to turn and attack you. This was the fault of a human doing this. This was not his instinct. I do believe it is how you treat and train the animal, not what is in their instinct. Pit Bulls are not the only type of dog that has been the culprit of mauling/killing a child or attacking a person or another dog (do you remember the two poodles that killed the 2 year old a few years back?). In my opinion, I believe they have been given this bad rap about this because they are trained to be fighters because of their ability to withstand torture. Torture that is administered and taught by their human owners. Any dog can be taught to fight AND any dog can be taught to love...

I am a pit bull owner, and my dogs are the most tame dogs I have ever known. It is the owners that need punished for what their dogs do.

I am also a pit bull owner and no I don't think they should be illegal. Why punish a whole breed of dogs just because of the ones that are raised to fighters and killers. Just like people there is good and bad in every breed.

I don't think they should be banned or illegal. I do believe that before anyone owns one they should be checked out and trained before owing one. (I know that isn't going to happen though.) Pits are a thinking breed, that is why they usually are not a good obedience animal. That is how they survived the fighting when they were first being bred. If you do some investigating in the history of the breed it is fasinating. No animal should be punished for the stupidity of its owner. Because of what they were bred for the potential for damage is strong, so proper handling and training is a must. This goes for the animal and the owner.

If all people go by what the media says there would be no dogs at all, a dog is the mirror of it's master. If you distroy the dog distroy the master too. I have 13 pits and don't have problems with any of them. THE PERSON MAKES THE DOG WHAT IT IS. People need to own 1 before they say something that they don't know, check the dogs that bite most often and the pit is around the 100th dog out of 154 races. PEOPLE DEPEND TO MUCH ON THE MEDIA, THAT IS WHY SOCIETY IS SO MESSED UP THESE DAYS.

I don't think it should be illegal, because not all pit bulls are dangerous, it depends on how their owners treated them or how they were raised. I have 3 pit bulls 1 male, 1 female, and a male puppy...all of them are very friendly and sweet to everyone except for cats and frogs...

don't think it would be that easy to make it illegal to own a pit bull, but i think it is a bad idea for anyone especially those with children to own one with all the dangers of random violence.

I agree--mine is like a big baby--my daughter calls him 'Stud Puppy' (his name is Floyd). He's a sweetheart mixed pit, a bit on the small side and he's not even the alpha dog at my house (that designation goes to my Jack Russell mix Bella, aka BellyCakes). When the neighbor tried to tell me I should have had him put down, rather than adopting him, I took serious offense. Floyd is just like an over enthusiastic puppy and I'd never trade him for the world.
