Would a Nuclear War actually end Humanity?

I often (well occasionly) wonder about this, I mean there only have to be a few humans that survived and were in close proximity of each other. We are a highly adaptable species, If you think about it the other animals would all be struggeling to survive as well. There must be numerous locations in the world where there is a protecive earthform or something and would cause a group of humans to survive.
