In California USA there is a place called Calaveras County "Home of the Motherlode". The "Motherlode" is mainly a term for the gold rush era. We also have Mark Twain's famous story of the "Jumping Frog". There is a county fair that we actually jump frogs for a nice lump sum reward.
Calaveras County to me has more to it than gold rush old'n days and the "jumping frog". I see friendly people, big open spaces, lots of wild life, and beautiful places that aren't tourist packed. It is nice to go to the tourists locations, but sometimes you need to venture off road a bit.
The babbling brooks remind me of fairytales and are so relaxing to just sit and listen to nature. Hiking out to some of the caves and exploring them is a great way to get out of the heat on a hot summer day. Taking a walk on a back road is a soothing way to deal with the tourist buzz. Fishing on the back side of the lakes (there are about four of them that I know of) instead of where everyone else (tourist) has fished.
These are just a few things I wanted to share about my county I live in. Enjoy!
