If I wanted to sign up for other online paying sites, I'd ask around. I hate being solicited with form letter style 'invitations' to join these things. I don't care if they're legitimate or not. It bugs me the same way getting called by telemarketers or door to door sales people bug me. If I want something, I'll go and look for it myself.
Anyone else get frustrated by this?

I fine them frustrating when they try to be cute or exciting, but I REALLY hate it when they try to pretend they are from someone who knows you. Those ones that start out with "hey!" and and use misleading subject lines to try to trick you into opening them. Those people cannot possibly believe that your opening their e-mail is going to lead you to buy anything from them...it just sucks!

I've noticed some people do this, they invite you to be their friend then send you spam. Easy way to make it stop is to report them to the program they are promoting, they will have their account deleted for spamming.
