Have you ever auditioned to be a contestant on a TV show?

I moved to Los Angeles from NJ back in 1985 and soon thereafter I applied to be on a game show that did not last long on the air.
I think the host was Wink Martindale and it was being filmed at the old Merv Griffin studios in Hollywood near Sunset and Vine Streets, not too far from the Paladium.
After filling out some papers each person had to go up front and give some information about them and their reasons for being there.
I bombed and did not make it to the second step. I went to this bar not far from there on Sunset that I ended up meeting my first husband at and later one couple that had recognized me showed up to say that one of them had been on a taping of the show but could not say what the results were and would not get the prizes until after air date.
I knew someone on Epinions.com that was a contestant on Jeopardy. I know from watching Oprah that a few of the guests that were there the day she gave out cars had to sell them since they did not have the money to pay for the taxes.
I think that could ruin chances of keeping prizes if you have to pay the fees right at that time.
What has been your experience with being a contestant on a show or getting something for free?
