I have been trying to follow through on some survey sites. A lot of them ask for a payment upfront and even guarantee money back in case of failure to earn by filling out surveys. Do you have any advice on whether these sites are credible?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Just be sure you never give anyone a penny. I don't know what you've stumbled upon but no legitimate survey site asks you for money. The legit sites are marketing firms trying to gage consumer opinions on products and services.
If they're asking you for money, they're running some sort of scam. You shouldn't even be paying for a list of survey sites... another huge scam!
If you want a free list, try: http://mommyspace.blogspot.com/2006/08/my-favorite-survey-sites.html , This isn't the largest list you'll find, but they're all 100% free, 100% legit and I guarantee you that. I've made money with all these sites and not one has ever asked me for anything other than my honest opinion.
I hope you'll run from the sites you've found! It really angers me that there are so many people out there trying to scam us!

If they are asking for payment upfront, then it's a scam. For onething, the bone fide market reasearch companies will pay you for your time and opinion, you shouldn't have to pay them. For another - some of us are happy to share information for free about the good sites! So no need to pay for info! If you go to my profile, you'll see a link to my blog, where I detail some of the ones that have worked for me. Be warned though - you won't make a fortune doing surveys, you'll just make some pocket money. HTH
