What's The Cheapest and easiest pet to own?

Have you ever owned a pet? Well I have and to me they all are expensive. My dog died, and I would like to own another pet of any kind. So what pet is the cheapest to take care of?

I would probably think a fish... but u have to watch out with them also.. most of them have to have the water right with the temp. and the solutions and stuff.. but there are fish out there that are very easy to care for... also turtles are pretty easy but they stink.. cats are pretty easy to care for..

I'd say fish but they are far from having a dog.
