Kwanzaa, what is it?

First, I am not black. Second, I have heard of Kwanzaa and I know it is a festival. However, it hasn't been around long, I don't think? Is this correct, do you celebrate it and if so, what do you get out of it? I am genuinely asking and not trying to be an idiot about this.
