Exercising the arms - I want to exercise

I have this 5 lb. weight, a circle one (like that would go on a barbell). What are the best and safest arm exercises I can do with this at my desk (hopefully w/o embarrassing myself in front of my co-workers, ha ha!). I have tried bicep curls, and raising one arm up and down with it in my hand, and holding it with both hands and raising it up above my head and lowering to my chin and raising it again. Is 5 lbs. enough to get in shape with? I want to get thinner b/4 I get muscles, so I look leaner. Should I lift more weight or do lots of reps? How many reps should I try to do a day, do you think???

Do you do bicep curls? This is where you hold your arm at your sides with the dumb bell in your hand, palm facing from flex at the elbow and curl the weight up toward your shoulders and tense your biceps at the top of the exercise. Slowly lower the dumb bell back to the starting postition. Repeat the exercise for 12-15 reps. Also Shoulder presses? Grasp two dumb bells with an overhand grip and hold them at shoulder level, palms facing forward press both weights upward then lower the weights to the starting position. Repeat for 12-15 reps.
