Would you buy your son a Barbie?

If your son wanted a toy that is considered to be a girl's toy, would you get it for him? People don't seem to have much of a problem buying boy's toys for girls. But with boys it seems to be different. Thoughts?

Well, if he expressed a preference for girls' toys, I'd buy them for him. I would like to think I'd be enlightened enough to accept my son no matter what prevailing gender roles might be. I'd probably have to try to explain to him, though, that other kids might be unkind to him because of it. However, I would never want to discourage my child from growing into the person he is, even if it crosses traditional gender boundaries. But it would be a tightrope between that and also trying to prepare him for a real world that is much less tolerant. UNFORTUNATELY.

Thanks for the great answer. I usually wait a while before assigning a best response, but I think that one would be hard to beat!
