Volvo windshield wiper noise

Re 1993 Volvo 240 wagon: The wipers work properly, but emit a fairly loud thumping noise at both the top and bottom end of the swipe. The wipers do not hit or touch the windshield frame. It quickly becomes very distracting while driving in rain. This stumps my Volvo garage. I don't know where to begin.
