What are some things that you won't buy the generic version of? For us it's macaroni and cheese. Every knockoff we've tried tastes like noodles mixed with orange sand.

Definately in my household the consensus is "choosy moms choose kraft mac and cheese". The others are just nasty (although I've heard the Harris Teeter brand is good but I haven't tried it). We've actually gotten a generic mac and cheese one time that looked BROWN when it was done! The other is 2 liter soda. It doesn't taste bad, but we've discovered that it goes flat VERY quickly compared to brand name soda.

I just thought of another one -- generic crayons -- they are like trying to color with candles

I'm with ya on the mac n cheese. Generic mac is nasty. I won't buy generic soup either. After having Campbell's soup, generic is kinda salty and gross. Generic sausage won't work either, too fatty and gristly. I don't mind generic bread, cereal or spices...really, generic isn't bad at all for some things. I found I like generic meat tenderizer better than the $4 stuff.

We buy mostly generics. I agree with you on the generic soups. Haven't tried one yet that I like -- especially the Cream of "Whatever" soups.

I use the generic cream of whatever soups from Aldi for cooking- I wouldn't eat cream soups otherwise. I can't stand generic Velveeta Cheese, no matter what brand it is. I buy a lot of generics for cost savings. I haven't found a generic toilet paper that is worthwhile- I always buy brand name for that.

I don't have a problem with generic brands as my wife wont put any in the shopping trolley, never mind in the pantry! But from blokes at work the concenses is that the generics are wanting in the taste department!

Many are, but some are actually pretty good. I haven't found much of a difference in a number of generics, but then, maybe it tastes better to me because it costs less.

I usually buy generic of most things. I admit with soda pop I don't only because many of the generics give me migraines. The same with some aspertames. However I'm always willing to try a generic and see if it's just as good. Sometimes they are better. Some of the generic mac and cheeses I prefer over the Kraft version. It depends a lot on the generic in question.

Which mac and cheeses? We usually buy generics too, but we haven't found a good generic mac and cheese.

I don't mind most generic brands, they are usually better buys. It depends on your tastes; my mom will only use Hienz catsup-- but she busy lots of other store brands. A good rule of thumb is: it you don't like it, it's not a good deal-- even if it's a the cheapest price.

Many generic manufacturers are the SAME manufacturers that make the same stuff for branded companies. Ive done research on this before because I try to save money when it comes to groceris and have come across articles that say this. I usually try to buy store brand vs. brand. I do agree with the mac n cheese, though...it just doesnt taste the same, but everything else that I have tried is just fine.

I heard that about the maunfacturers as well. Someone told me that generic batteries are made by the same companies that make eveready and duracell too. My motto is, never pay retail -- so I'm always looking for ways to get more for my money. Thanks for the insightful comments!

For us there are several things : toliet paper, vegtables, soda, mac & cheese too, and a few otehr things I can't think of at the moment. I've tried some generics but they are just not the same quality/taste as the name brands.

I don't brand name mac and cheese. I like homemade mac and cheese. My kids likes it either way. The powder cheese goes great on plain popcorn.

Lots of times it doesn't make much difference and I'll go with whatever is cheapest. Two generics I like better are Acme canned tuna fish and Safeway salsa. Four brandnames that can't be replaced are: Scott toilet tissue, Contadina tomato paste, Philadelphia cream cheese & Dijon mustard. Gotta have those in the original.

you're the second person on here who's mentioned the Philly Cream cheese... I haven't noticed much of a difference with that though. Maybe I need to educate my palate :)

Cheetos, Philidelphia cream cheese, Hellman's mayo, and Snuggle fabric softener are all musts. Practically everything else can be generic and be fine.
