Cats on The Counter? UGH!

My house cats are frequently jumping up on the counter, thusly annoying both my fiance' and me. More her, because she wasn't a fan of cats to begin with, but I am developing more frustration because they don't stop. They also know they aren't supposed to do it, because it never happens with one of us in the room, but rather when we go downstairs. Does anyone have any tips on how to keep the feline friends from getting up on the counters?

My mom and dad had this problem. They would squirt the cats with a water bottle when they got on the counters, but that isn't going to help you since they wait for you to leave the room. Putting double sided tape on the counters (or anything else you want them off of) will keep them off. It might be annoying for a while, but once they learn, they'll stay off. They don't like anything sticky on their paws, so they jump down. I have heard that aluminum foil, or anything else that is noisy, will alsp keep them off. The theory is that the noise startles them so they jump down. Not sure if that works or not, though.

I am going to try your double-sided tape idea for sure! It is worth a try at least.

The double sided sticky tape sounds like an excellent idea and think i will try that one myself! I was a loss of what to do apart from shutting the kitchen door to keep him out!

you can try rigging empty soda can up with strings that have coins in them so they crash when the cat jumps up .I personal think a scat mat well be the best thing it basicly gives them a slight shock when they touch iit not more then a static shock not I like shocking pet but if it means them keeping a home it is worth it .You can find them online once the cat advoids the area you can move them, to stop them from another .

The noise maker sounds like a great idea. I wonder how long that would work? Cats seem to be very curious and hard headed sometimes!

I have tried spraying my cat with water. It works for only a moment. She is right back before I can turn around and place the spray bottle down. I really don't have any hope for you. But, if someone posts something that you think will work, please share it with me.

I would be glad to let you know. I have tried the water too, but it only seems to work if I am in the room. As soon as I head downstairs I can hear the thump of a cat jumping right back up there!

We have cats also that get on the counter. They are older tho and know that as soon as they see us, if they are on the counter, they better get down. We used to pop them on the bottom, but now we don't have to do that. Consistency is the key!

My cats have just began to do this. they have never done it before. I have no idea why. I hate it. I remember going to visit a gal from church one day. Her cat was on the table eating from a dish. I told her and I will never forget what she said "I know, they do it all the time". I would never eat or drink anything there after that. If they allow it, it just seems wrong to me. I do not allow my cats on the table or counter. They may get up there but I am quick to put them down. Drives me crazy.

I was once told to place flat baking trays all over the bench and put water in them. Cats hate getting the water on their paws! They also hate it when the tray falls of the bench with them and they get their body wet too! They will learn very quickly! The plus factor is that water is harmless to the cat and your home! Good luck with that one!
