Can a couple for there wedding ask for money instead of gift's?

myself and my fiance are going to be merging two established household's so we have all the household item's that are needed. we have more debt then the need for gift's.

I dont find anything wrong in this though it may raise a few eyebrows. But so what. If thats what u want. Infact i make it a point usually to give cash as a gift so that my freinds can buy what they want rather rather than adding one more thing to their house which they dont need.

Yep this has been done. My friend was a single mum she married a single dad so they had all they needed in the way of toasters etc. They needed to get a bigger house. Everyone who attended just put the money in a blank envelope into a special jar. No one could then winge that this person only gave $2 and I gave more.
