2007 Academy Awards

With the Academy Award nominations not too far off, what do you feel were some of the best movies of the year? Were there some small independent films that you really enjoyed? Maybe you just loved the special effects that something like Pirates 2 had? I really loved Akeelah and the Bee as well as The Departed, and I hope that Leonardo Dicaprio comes away with an award for either that one, or Blood Diamond. But what does everyone else think? Who deserves an Oscar in the coming awards nominations and selections?

I loved 2 movies above all this year-and you named the one-The Departed. That movie had a cast of great actors in it and I hope that someone leaves with a win-Leo gets my vote there. The other smaller film that I really liked was Little Miss Sunshine-it was different and entertaining. I want to see Akeelah and the Bee, since I have heard good things about it

Little Miss Sunshine - Little Miss Sunshine
I think as you, but I believe that Little Miss Sunshine is a good film, however still not better that the first one that you spoke.

Groomtobe, you should post a listing of your top 10 movies and have others do so, too. I love to see these lists, and get some many good DVD rental ideas! I particularly like indies (movies that are easy to miss at the theater but still worth seeing).

I think that the best picture reward will go either to "Departed" by Martin Scorsese or to "Apocalypto" by Mel Gibson. Those two are most interesting movies of 2006 in my opinion and both deserve rewards from the Academy.

"Apocalypto" and "The Departed," from what I know about them, are the types of movies that earn (and often win) multiple Oscars, including the most-coveted Best Director and Best Picture Academy Awards. I think "Apocalypto" has a fair chance of winning Best Picture, though I think Scorsese might win Best Director.

I haven't made it out to see Mel Gibson's latest, but it is on my list of must-sees.

Hmmm. I'd have to say Pirates 2 is up there. I heard Dreamgirls is up there, although I haven't seen the movie. And I HOPE that Pursuit of Happyness makes it. That'd be wonderful. I haven't seen Little Miss Sunshine, but I want to REALLY bad! I hope Happy Feet gets something too for animation. I thought that movie was so cute.

I would love to answer, however I don't even know what movies were popular because I have this automatic forgetful response in my brain. I just love to get out the popcorn and watch the Academy Awards every year to see what's going on in the movies, so I'll know what movies to borrow from the library from the previous year because going to the movies and buying and renting movies is ridiculously expensive. So, I'm looking forward to watching. Thanks for reminding me.

That happens to me a lot as well when the question is asked. What did you watch last night? Ummmm... then after thinking about it I might finally remember!

I too liked Little Miss Sunshine & The Departed. I wasn't too crazy about Blood Diamond. But Stranger Than Fiction was a sweet little movie. It's a shame it didn't make more money than it did. I guess maybe people aren't used to seein Will Ferrell like that yet?

I LOVED "Stranger than Fiction." It's a great movie, very creative. It reminded me of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" for its creative genius. I like movies that are a little off kilter. One of my favorites from years past is "Lost in Translation." But back to "Stranger than Fiction": This had an awesome cast, not just Will Ferrell, but Dustin Hoffman (pure genius), Emma Thompson, Queen Latifa, and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Ferrell's love interest. I highly recommend this one. The music in the movie is great, too. I'm wondering if there's a soundtrack. Anyone know?

I haven't seen Stranger Than Fiction just yet, as it didn't strike my fancy when it was in theaters. I will pick it up as soon as it hits DVD though.

I did not see that many movies this year that would be contenders. I loved Little Miss Sunshine and definitely think that deserves some kind of award. Pirates 2 was awesome but probably won't win much. I heard Pursuit of Happyness is going to be up for some, and although I enjoyed it I wouldn't say it's the best of the year. I still have to see The Departed and Blood Diamond! I feel so out of the movie loop this year :)

I with you. I see a lot of movies but have to wait for most to come out on DVD first because no theatres play anything Indie around here. But, gotta say that I loved Little Miss Sunshine too and would really love to see it win something. Maybe Steve Carrell as Supporting Actor. I also think Pirates 2 will be nominated butprobably wont win much. It didn't last time.

At the end of January, they have the announcements of the official nominations. Should be interesting!

The Queen. It was one of those movies that I think just had Oscar nominations written all over it. First of all it's a drama, which the Academy loves, and secondly it's based upon true events which the Academy also loves. But as far as what I have read from critics they are quite unsure this year. They seem to think Dreamgirls will get several nominations and might be the dark horse to take the best picture award. Who knows?
• United States
28 Dec 06
Dreamgirls could indeed be one of the dark horses at this years awards show, and I haven't seen "The Queen" so I can't comment intelligently on that selection. It makes me think this year could be even more wide opne than I had guessed!

2006, sadly, will be remembered by me as the year I didn't see any new movies at the theaters. Maybe I'm getting too wary of going out, or maybe I'm spending way too much time at my computer, but this is the first time that I've seen a recently released film only in a watch-at-home format; normally I watch a movie on the "silver screen" at a cinema and THEN buy it on DVD. This year, though, I skipped all movies...even the one 2006 film I bought on DVD. That having been said, I'd have to say that my favorite film of the year is SUPERMAN RETURNS. I was afraid that it would be a somewhat less-than-super rip-off that ignored Richard Donner's 1978 classic SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, but no...it turned out to be a really good movie.

Well, I think that "The Departed" and "Blood Diamond" and "Little Miss Sunshine" are the three lead-runners for the awards. Pirates 2 was delightfully entertaining but I doubt it will get any awards (maybe Johnny Depp would get a nomination), but more or less it is like the "Matrix" series, which was wonderful, but hard got any (of the main) awards!! Happy feet, Ice Age 2 and Open Season will complete for the Animation awards.

Very nice selections for the awards. I agree that Pirates 2 was interesting, and may stand a chance at some lesser awards, but not best picture.

Children of men ahs to be a winner of something. it was brilliant, and intelligent. and made me think. possibly the best movie ever made. i also think pirates 2 will do well, just cuz it hit the fad. xmen 3 could too. either way lets hope something with a good storyline and unholywood press attached to it cscoops up the best

I think it might be a tight Oscar race this year. Leo was good in Blood Diamond. Have you seen the poster for this year's Academy Awards? It features great quotes from great movies. You can see it at the Oscars website. You can even buy it there. I'm more of an indie film person myself.

It's a really neat poster. And it's a really neat set of quotes. It would be like having a book of quotations hanging on your wall!

27 Dec 06
As a matter of fact, I have not seen the poster yet! But it sounds interesting if it has a lot of quotes. I wonder if I would be able to place them all with no hints? I am going to head over there now.... thanks for the tip!

For which category, though? Best Picture? I seriously doubt that a Walt Disney live-action movie based on, of all things, a ride at the Disney parks is going to take home any Academy Awards that aren't technical, i.e., best make-up, best editing, best sound design, etc. I liked the first one, but the mixed reviews on 2 made me want to skip it at the theaters (although I almost received it as a Christmas present).
