Clothes Dryer or Line Dried?

Sometimes I miss clothes that have been hung on a line to dry. When I was little, Mom used to hang up our clothes on one of those outside hangers that looked like a huge white TV antenna. The jeans would come off the line like boards, the sheets were like plywood, but for some reason I miss that.

The clothes dryer is a lot more convenient and mostly I have to use it and am glad to have it. But I really love the smell of things that have been hanging out in the fresh air. I try in the spring and summer , when I have time, to hang some things outside. Uusally white things so the sun can brighten them up...There's a township a couple towns away from me that has an ordinance forbidding people from hanging out wash. Can you believe that! You can't hang out clothes on your own property because it's considered unsightly. I could never live there.

i like using both methods combined. first i use the dryer and then hang all the clothes outside. using the dryer alone may cause your clothes to have bad smell so hanging them outside to dry would be a great help. and since you already used the dryer, it wont take long before the clothes dry completely and then you can fold them

Another reason why I hate the winter, you can't get your clothes smelling great and fresh by hanging them out on the line, I hate damp clothes indoors and clothes hanging around on air driers. I do have a tumble dryer but it just makes the clothes creased up and its not the same. When you bring in clothes after they have been hanging outside on a nice sunny day they are a hundred times better and you get the special 'smells' from outdoors. Roll on Spring so I can stop using the damn tumble dry!

I somtimes miss hanging clothes out in the sunshine. They always smelled so nice. If you coud have a nice brezzy day the jeans, towels and sheets would be nice and soft. We always had a long line to hang the clothes on. Had to use a pole to prop the line up in the middle because the weight of the wet clothes pulled the line down and the clothes in the middle would hit the ground.

I still prefer to dry clothes with the help of good ol' sunshine and clotheslines. Nothing beats the fresh natural scent it brings and you can even save alot from electric bills. Our washing machine has a dryer function but we never really need it nor even used it.

That is why i don't like to dry things outside on the line, because they are stiff and uncomfortable. There is nothing quite like a freshly dried warm article of clothing right out of the dryer.

Line dried is nice for things that I would rather not put into the dryer (black stuff fades, cotton stuff shrinks, etc.). I do like the smell of line-dried clothes tho, even tho they still need to be rolled in the dryer for a few minutes with a bounce sheet to knock out the stiffness and any static cling.

I use a clothes dryer but last month I had to hang my clothes my dryer was broke. I was so happy when I had enough money to get it fixed.

Do you associate it with happy memories from childhood? Smell and touch are pretty strongly linked to emotion and bring back a lot of good memories. I remember how to this day I love the smell of fresh laundry washed in a particular detergent, just because the smell brings back vivid emotions concerning a particular person.
Well, we have a dryer, and so did my parents, but most of the clothing I wear is cotton, so I have to either buy stuff knowing it will shrink about a full size or line dry it anyway.
The beef I have with line drying is that my clothes come out soooo wrinkled. Even with cotton, if you get it out of the dryer right away and hang it up, it will be presentable without ironing. But if you hang it dry? Forget it and warm up the steam iron... :P
Can you tell I hate housework? *g*

not really -- I hated hanging them up. It does evoke a simpler time, and maybe that's it. I did like how the clothes felt after they were broken in.
Maybe it's the dryer sheets, but for some reason clothes dried in a dryer have an artificial softness to them.

I love this discussion! It brings me back when I was living in Puerto Rico and we used to line dry our clothes. That is so cool. I do remember though, the times we had to go outside running to bring in the clothes because it started to rain. he he....
I used to help my mom by holding the bucket with clothes pins. Thanks so much for the reminisce.

i prefer my clothes to be line dried. i like the smell of the sun on my clothes. i feel that its more refreshing compared with those dried using the dryer.

Clothes dryer, it is way more faster and more efficent then a clothes line.
