Are people genuinely good, or do we do things that benefit ourselves later?

Sometimes I wonder why we do what we do. If I help someone is it because I hope that the good act will somehow be repaid later? I notice some people give money to bums. Do they do it because they don't want to look greedy or alleviate guilt, or is it truly charity?

I think some people do what they do for genuine reasons, after all I like to think most people have compassion or it is nice to think they do.
