Do you tell your kids fairy or other genre of stories?

I tell my kid (who is 4 years old) some stories sometimes at bed times. Now I plan to tell him at least one story every alternate day . Because it has good affect on the kid's mind and brain . It makes them imagine things and situations . In the long run it generates some sort of creativity in him . But it is difficult to find good stories in good number at reasonable price . In the market the illustrated story books are too costly . Can anybody name some websites where stories are available free of cost? And do you tell stories to your kids?

friend,it is a very good habit of telling stories to kids not only at bedtime but also when they are free and so are you. From the stories they can learn a lot.Not only stories about fairy tales but also stories about your country ,the land around you,the world would be quite interesting.I started telling stories to my daughter since she was 1 year.I even went one step ahead.I used to read stories to her and take her to the library where i was a regular member.Yu know what, she started to devlop an interest in reading and by the time she was 3 she read books.Today she is 7 and she makes an effort to read my novels. www.magickeys.com is a place where you have on line stories also.Read out some but it is better if you buy some. You can buy an Indian magazine called champak which is cheap, beautifully illustrated and for children.Happy storytime.

Hi, don't know if this is much help as it's only my own opinion, but I do believe children should be 'told' fairy tales. By this I mean that the tales should be told, not read from a book. I think it makes it better for the child if you can. This way you can 'edit' the tale to suit the child, I never change the main points of a story mind, just the little details and language. Young children sometimes find it hard to understand the words used in traditional tales and whilst I would never 'baby' a story (kids know if you're doing this and it upsets them) I do sometimes use more common words with the same meaning. I also change or add details if it won't affect the actual plot, I for one get fed-up with 'blond haired beauties' and some of the stories don't actually go into that much detail. When I first started teling my little brother stories he was forever asking 'what colour dragon?' or something similar so I started putting more detail in. He definatley got the point of the stories, without me sitting and telling/asking him, and preffered the ones where I'd made it more personal, giving the hero the same colour hair and eyes as him, or putting in other little details which he could recognise in his own life. (A fun one now is making the 'evil queen/stepmother' figures look like a teacher he particularly dislikes!) Anyway, I'm rambling, as I said this is only my opinion, I've not read any of the books or such that people have suggested - but I think fairy tales are important, they teach our children morals without force-feeding them and they're also an important part of our culture and heritage.

well telling stories to kids is an excellent job of the parents. of course not only the creativity , your kid also able to grasp and form an outlook about the outer world before he grow. well as regards to the web site, i am not aware since i used to tell the stories of ramayana/mahabharat or short storeies from vedas/puranas etc., since i beleive there is no other special book for stories as all the imagined stores are beased on this golden scripts only. better instead of finding out the web site and shops better try to feed the stories from inside scripts like ramayana/mahabharat/purans/and if possible bring and show them the pictures of god. thanks for nice discussion

I agree that stories really help a kids mind and brain, and using your imagination really can spark other creativity in other areas. I wish I could have more commitment to reading more...alot more...with my kids, but I dont like reading books too much, I usually fall asleep...bad habit....but I encourage my older kids to read to the little ones! I subscribe to BibleRhymes.com....check it out....free E-books on the bible for kids told in rhyme...I was referred by a friend and totally impressed by this mans ability to convert the bible stories into ryhme......... www.BibleRhymes.com..... also, I dont know what area you are in, but my local library offers free e-books on line...with your patron library card...all I have to do is log in and a million books are at my disposal! well maybe not a million, but so many I cant read them all!!!....Also a suggestion may be to pick up some stories on cd or cassette at the library, and you both could listen to them, my kids like this a lot, and they really have to imagine what is being told.....they use cool sound effects and such...Good luck!

oh, yes. i read fairy tales to my nephews. some people say it's not good to let children believe in happily-ever-afters, because real life does not work that way. but i believe kids learn a lot of moral values in these fairy tales. what's your opinion?
