Giving up the arts and physical education in elementry schools?

Back in the 1960s when I was in elementry school they indoctrinated the music, arts and physical ed classes saying that they were to stimulate a student's mind and make them study better, retain their lessons longer and perhaps reduce the nuumber of drop-outs if school was made to be more interesting. It certainly worked because the number of that generation going to college and earning a higher degree far surpassed their parents and grandparents combined. Now it is being said we must go back to the 'old ways' - the old grind of reading, writing and arithmetic rote system to develop 'discipline' in the classroom and cease such 'frivilous' and "costly" courses such as music, art and PE. What???? Blaming these courses on today's dyfunctional classroom behavior is like blaming typewriting on the demise of cursive writing.

I agree exactly. You might as well take out lunch periods and bathroom breaks, too.
