My Friend Has Cancer

I just found out a dear friend of mine in Ireland has skin cancer, she was diagnosed 2 days ago. A third party told me by email so she doesn´t know I know yet. I want to phone her but I don´t know what to say or whether to be sympathetic or what she´ll want to hear. Do I just be supportive and tell her I´m here if she needs me?
Normally I know what to say in every situation but this has me in a panic. I feel like going to visit her but I live so far away now.
Any advice welcomed please.

Cancer of any kind is a scary thing. Perhaps you could call your friend up and invite her to lunch or coffee or something. Talk about normal things, and give her an opportunity to mention it. Some people like to keep private and will only open up when they are good and ready. Just be her friend and she will be able to ask for help when she is ready.
