Why does beauty matter?

Is it just evolution, picking the best mates based on looks? Or are more attractive considered to be better people and have better habits? Can you really tell stuff about a person by how attractive they are?

People who take good care of themselves are attractive to me because they do care in the first place and it shows. But what is attractive to one person may not be the same to another. Beauty truly does seem to me to be in the eye of the beholder even though there are "standards" of what people are supposed to be beautiful in the entertainment business. Maybe I'm just a bit odd but the personality and character of a person can make someone more or less attractive to me.
