Cats and Spider Plants - Fact or Fiction?

I have always known to keep spider plants out of reach from my cats as I was told that they are not healthy for cats that like to chew on plantlife, as mine do, so I have always had them hanging and out of reach. A friend of mine recently told me that the plants are not good for the cats because they can create an hallenegic effect for cats similar to LSD. I looked it up on the internet but could not find anything to back this up. Has anybody out there heard this before?

cat and spider plant - our pets can appreciate our plants and often get in trouble, with the spider plant though it appears to be harmless fun
spider plants are mildly hallucinogenic to cats says Ron Smith, Horticulturist, NDSU Extension Service(North Dakota State University) The cats need to be disciplined or they will trash the plant. I know this since mine if given the chance will chew up the leaves. Sometimes later to barf them up. I have found luck with hanging them on curtain rods and away from furniture where the cat could climb and reach them. Good Luck!!
