Elected or Appointed Public Officials?

In your home town are your public officials elected or appointed? Are you happy with the way its done in your home town? Right now our home town the public officials are elected into office. Although there has been some discussion around town to making positions appointed. We really hope this doesn't come about. We do feel that switching to appointed officials is not a good thing. Appointed officals allow for a select few to decide who will be representing the town instead of the public. It also allows for the appointed officials to cater to the select few who are appointing officials instead of the public. What are your views on this?

Our officials are mostly elected. I agree with you that this is better than appointed, but it still ends up being a pretty small club of legislators. I don't care for appointments at all, though, because our governor has had to make some appointments when people in elected positions resigned (or "were resigned" as we used to refer to people who were forced out at one of my old jobs!). I think he made some very strange choices.

Thanks for the response. I hope they stay elected around here. Think a public official should be elected by majority vote.
