Smokey... I was living in a unit, it was Christmas when a neighbour in the flats next door held up his hand to show a tiny little grey kitten in his hand, he had bought it for his daughter. Nearly every night I would heat the little kitten crying hour after hour, I watch the little kitten grow up, he was beautiful, I was watering the garden one hot day and he came out and tried to drink the water from the hose, I brought him into my unit and gave him some milk and water, he was starving, his owners were hardly ever home so he would come and visit me. One day I saw a different man in the flat and I asked him where the people were because their cat was hungry, he said he was the agent for the flats, they had moved out, I said but their cat is still here he said he didn't think they wanted it because they left all the cat food in the cupboard...I took that little cat in and she stayed with me for 17years until she had kidney trouble...I said at the time I wouldn't have any more pets as it affected me so much when I lost my little Smokey. But Time will tell.

Lilac thank you for sharing this. I also had a cat named Smokey. She was a feral cat that was born in the barn here. I had her in the house for the last two years of her life. She was eight years old when she had to be put to sleep due to a skull tumor. The story of your Smokey reminds me so much of the last time I went to Humane Society. They had three cages upfront. Each of htem had a kitten of abour 4 months old and the one thing I remember because I left there with a heavy heart and upset was the bottom cage kitten. The note read he was also left in the apartment alone after the people moved. I don't think I will ever understand the cruelty some people have towards animals. You gave Smokey a beautiful life of much love and care. Bless you.

For me any amount of time I have is a reward. I've fostered kittens for a few weeks that I ended up losing to FKS and Rapid Transit like I've had cats like Morgan who lived to be 21 and Minneu 19.

What a beautiful story ,my husband loves cats and would prefer them to dogs. We have had cats and they make wonderful friends. This story just proves to me that you are the wonderful thoughtful person i have always thought you to be

Oh what a nice thing to say thank you, I love nearly all animals and I must say it is unusual to hear a man liking cats, you have a rare gem there, I have always thought most men don't think it very manly to like cats....your husband sounds nice.

That's kind of how me and my son got our meumeu kitty. We moved into a new apartment and this lovely gray tabby kept coming around. We tried to ignore her 'cause we really weren't looking for a pet as we had just lost our old dog.But she wouldn't have it.She kept coming round and as she had no collar we started feeding her.Next thing you know she slipped in the door and well we just kept her.We tell everyone she adopted us and that's the truth of it.;-)

awwwww she was beautiful!!! i love cats and im sorry to hear you lost her but 17 years is a very long time nearly my life span up till now!! and i have had my share of love from a furry friend but not as long as that and i know how heart broken i was when i lost mine.... i still to this day have not got another but i may do too. cats are so loving that although you will never forget your little beauty you can love another just as much. Good luck if you get a new pet they are the one creature that is always there for you when you treat them right and you obviously did with that life span!! Love A Fella Kitty Lover

What a lovely story, and I'm glad that Smokey had so much love after such a shaky start for him. I can understand that you don't want another cat at the moment, but I hope in time you feel able to share your life with another one, not as a replacement for Smokey but just as another life companion. Who knows, maybe another orphan will find it's way to you?:) Your Smokey looks a lot like Mo, the cat who I share my house with along with my friend. I'd add a pic, but I can't figure out how!

That is the sweetest story! You are truly a humanitarian. Many people would have let that man take that kitten to the pound. All the while thay would be justifying this saying, "it's not my problem and it's not my fault!" Though many people also find it difficult to say no to a cute little kitten!

That was a very nice thing you did. Its terrible when people move and leave their pets behind. I could not leave my pet behind. I am sure you gave Smokey a lot of love and I'd be willing to bet that you could do it again. You will never be able to replace him but I am sure you will be able to get another cat someday. I am sorry for the loss of your cat.

Thats a great story lilaclady, you know I didn't realize cats lived that long. I am sorry you lost Smokey, but you probably did save her life or at least help extend it...SS
