How long do you wait to fill your car up with gas? When the pointer is on E or.

almost empty or do you fill it up sooner than that? I know that with the gas prices the way they are, we try and wait as long as possible t o fill our tanks up. I have heard that you should not go below one quarter full of gas. I have always stuck by this rule even when I did know why. I just had a tune up done on my fuel system today, which cost me $90. I have never run out of gas but wanted to do this to make sure my car runs well.

I am like you, I never fill up when its already on empty and the warning light goes on. I try to fill up before it reaches that point, as I have to drive 120 km to work and back home everyday, and Im too scared of running out of gas in the middle of nowhere!

Running out of gas is a very bad thing for you and for your car. Running out of gas can burn out your car's electric fuel pump from what a mechanic told me. He also said that the fuel pumps use fuel as lubrication. I know it is bad to run out of gas but did not know the reasons why til today.

I usually fill up at one quarter or below. That way I don't have to spend much time at the gas station. If I'll be driving over 100 miles and not sure where I'll find a gas station, I'll fill up first. Or if the price is really good, I'll fill up sooner to make sure I get that price. But a lot of times, I go until I'm 1 gallon away from empty. Or sometimes even closer than that. Mostly because I am lazy and hate going to the gas station.

You do not want to get too low because if you run out in the middle of nowhere you will get stuck plus your car could have more serious problems if you are not taking good care of the car.

Thanks for the best response! I tend to take good care of my car mostly, changing the oil on time and fixing things as it needs it. Since I live in the city there are luckily gas stations everywhere, as I'm still really bad at letting the car run low on gas... even 2 years after this discussion started. ;)

I usually wait until it's like 2-3 lines before empty to fill up. We have only been putting like $5 or $10 in so we have to get more gas like everyday.

I think it is easier to just fill it up to full so that you do not have to stop everday for gas. If i had money issues, I would probably do the same as you are doing. It is not good for the car to let it get too low or to run out of gas completely.

If I am really pressing for money and don't have much to put towards gas, then I will try to stretch my gas as far as I can, and drive until it gets near empty. But now a days, I try and fill up around the 1/4 line since it will only cost me $15 to fill it up then, as opposed to the $20.

That is good that you are trying to fill up around a 1/4 tank as it will help your car last longer.

How I wish we had US fuel prices!! At about US$10 a gallon in the UK I can easily spend $120 to fill her up. The actual cost of the fuel is similar, it's the tax that's the killer.

I never heard of the rule to not let it drop below a quarter of a tank. I personally would normally fill up my car when it was close to a quarter of a tank...but I was working then. Now that I am not working any my partner is the only income, we tend to let it run down to the needle hitting E before it gets filled. I hav to say, me not working really sucks!

It can be very tough to stick to some of these suggestions made when you do not have much income coming in and my money will be tight too with the rising cost of gas and everything else. Is your partner aware of the gas tank rule? You may want to let that person know so you both can avoid costly car repairs later.

Letting the tank go below 1/4 a tank is not good for the fuel injection system that most cars have these days. If continual abuse it will clog your fuel filter and even cause the fuel pump to burn up. I try to fill back up at 1/2 a tank. That way it doesn't hurt the budget so bad.

You are definitely right about that and I always fill up at 1/4 tank or just above it. I used to fill up at a half tank but decided on my own to do it close to the 1/4 tank. My car is pretty old so I decided to have the fuel pump tuned up anyways.

I never let my vehicle go lower than one half a tank, this way, I never worry about running out of gas or wrecking whatever happens when the gas tank is less than 1/4 full (dirty fuel=worse performance and lower gas milage per gallon?).

When I am the one filling it up I fill up when its just under half mark, or around that area. I don't like to be low or close to low. Scares me

I start thinking about it as it gets close to the quarter tank mark. I know on average how many miles I get per tank of gas and try to fill up 60-70 miles before it's empty.

My boyfriend fills up the truck at least once a week. He was doing it everyday as he works at a gas station. I asked him about the not letting your gas tank get under a quater of a tank and he says that people believe that if you do that then moisture can get into the gas lines and freeze in the colder weather. He is not sure in the truth of this belief because it has never happened to him.

I have heard the same things about the gas lines freezing up in the winter if the tank is less than a quarter tank or almost empty. I am not sure about that belief or not either.

I drive a diesel engined car and you sure don't want to run out of fuel. It's a real pain to bleed the system to get it going. You are going to use fuel anyway when you drive so it doesn't really matter when you put it in. The only advantage of a nearly empty tank is that a thief won't go far in it!!

That is very true, especially if you are in an area where there is a lot of carjacking. They will not go very far but I do think it is not good for a car to be less than a certain amount in the tank.

Oh I always try to not let my car go to empty before I fill it up again I did not know why but I alway seen my parents fill up the car before it went to empty and it must be for other reasons so that the car will not have other problems, which would costs us more money.

I wait till the orange light comes on. I ran out of gas once, but never again! As a general rule, you got 15 miles left once that light comes on.

I always fill gas until it comes to the red level, i.e., reserve and then only I fill it out to the full. Of late there has been an increase in number of cases where they have been tampering with the dispenser in order earn some extra money and we need to follow this carefully and should be alert when filling the petrol, else they will cheat us and we need to pay from our pocket everytime this happens and ultimately it is us who lose.

Hey with the way gas prices are going up,I can never keep the gas tank full.I always calcualate the milage and then fill the tank accordingly. Normal people like me cannot afford it mate. I am from an average family and now,I am thinking of changing my car to LPG,rather than pertol!!
