Drawing from my head is impossible

I love to draw. In fact, creating of any kind soothes my soul. I have this problem though. I can reproduce just about anything I see. That is if I'm looking at a picture or something. I can draw it bigger, smaller, make a few changes to improve the original, but, I cannot seem to reproduce images in my head. It's almost impossible. Any ideas?

This is really all about practice, you have got so used to copying that you have forgotton how to translate what your imagination sees into an image on teh paper. Try, as a possible excercise, imagining your idea on a flat screen, even in a picture frame if you like, just behind your minds eye. That might help you set it down on paper, but keep practicing, start with simple shapes, and move up from there, just keep at it and you will get the knack in no time

So if I have this right you can draw a copy of someone elses work, even elaborate on it a little, but you have difficulty imagining things to draw of your own? Have you tried some creative drawing exercises? Like closing your eyes and drawing, or even do this blindfolded. Or setting yourself a goal to draw, lets say a cat, and then drawing it in as many different artistic styles as possible, like abstartc, or portrait, etc. Line drawings, whatever. I think drawing is something that gets improved with disciplined practice, but imaginationa nd creativity has to be inspired and will only come when youre relaxed. try meditating before you draw or something. Changing where you create your art. Hope this helps a little.

I can't draw for crap but my mom can draw anything that is right in front of her. She's just like you if she can look at it she can draw it but from memory forget it. Look forward to reading the answers you get here, maybe they'll help her too.
