i have to write an article on any interesting topic for my college magazine. The problem is ma writer's block, it's not the typical dillema when u start writing something, and then u dun know how to continue with it. my predicament is that, i can't come up with a really interesting topic to write about. i want the topic to be something really interesting and worth reading about. i know if the topic is creative and inspirational enough, i shall be able to write about it.... can anyone suggest what to do? any good topics u have in mind, or any excercise that would help me overcome this Web of 'lack of ideas' that's currently on ma mind. all suggestions would be welcomed..thanx in advance:)

Start by writing a list about the top 10 things you enjoy, then go through and pick the three you think other people your age would agree with most. Do the article about why this is such a preoccupation for your peers. A top tip, work in threes. Pick three topics, find three angles about each one, then make at least three points in each angle. Tis give you a well balanced structure and stops you saying more about one than te other.

thanx! the work in threes idea looks really neat. i'll try working on these lines, and i think it shud be effective too. as for the list of 10 things, i already tried that, thought of writing about dreams, thought of writing about 'graftology' and several other topics, but at the end, i realised, this is something they could easily find on the internet too, am lookin for something that's totally out of the box

Very interesting idea, I had a similar one about analysis. Take something you are trying to analyze. And, make sure you look at three apposing aspects of each primary aspect. For instance you have a cube with different colors on each side. The cube has six sides and on each side there are many different things you could say about it. You pick a side and notice something of positive value, then something of negative value, and then something neutral in value. Do this with each side of the cube. You will have 18 points. You then take those 18 and place them side by side. Don't forget what part of the cube each one came from. Place all the positive in one column, then the negative, and then the neutral. All side by side so you can cross compare. If you have good skills of analysis this will yield some interesting results. You can do it with any subject. And, it allows you to assess your own mind as well. I know that was a little off subject but it may still be useful to you.

You can make anything interesting if it interests you. Concentrate on your own interests, hobbies or whatever and start talking about them, but write it down. It's the most natural thing in the world to talk about what we want to talk about.

My friend, I can help. I am an established writer. The reason people get writer's block is usually for one of two reasons... 1) Your knowledge pool on the subject you have chosen to write about is small, and you are struggling for content, or the opposite... 2) Your knowledge pool is so big that have trouble narrowing down your topics. Which of these do you think is the major problem? If it's number 1, then the solution is to go back to the trenches and do more research. Put your writing on hold and get better references, research materials, do more brainstorming, get more maincourse material. Mix it up, work it out. One of the most important rules in writing is to write from overflow! Get more information, not less. If the problem is number 2, then the solution is to use an outline... I. Intro A. 1. 2. B. 1. 2. C. 1. 2. II. Body A. 1. 2. B. 1. 2. III. Conclusion You'll find that if you build a strict outline BEFORE you begin the actual writing, your structure will have not only have better content, but better arranged content. You can replace and remove sentences and paragraphs at will to best reflect the sequence of thought flow, a key to good writing. Build an outline, then put meat on the bone!

Ask a few friends what they like to read. You should know about your colleage and the interests of others like you. For instance I know that in my sons school everyone is intersted in the Internet. But my nephew's school it is not the case. Reserach your topic on the Internet and summerise it. Try to use simple language.

What a great many writers do is keep a notebook writing down ideas no matter if they fit the current topic or not. Whole books have been written based on an imaginary one line dialouge. Others have taken bits and pieces of casual conversations to build articles and short stories on. Pay attention to what others are discussing, you'll probably find several possibles there.

Brainstorm on a piece of paper or take a walk, always does it for me.

You're probably in the right place to help though :-) Scroll through some of the discussions here - you may find something that grabs your attention and may well be on a topic you have no idea about - if you find something maybe try writing something that totally opposes what is being talked about. I often find that a word or phrase will start my writing and once started I'm fine - often ending up in a completely different place than I thought I would - but like you have a problem figuring out what I want to write about and getting that first sentence down - but once I have that first line I'm good to go:-)

Wow, tough call. I wish I always knew how to over writer's block myself. There are some things you can do. First off, quit trying--take a break--get away from the notebook and the computer and go for a walk. While you're out, breathe in deeply, take a look at how blue the sky is. Say hi, and smile to the first people you pass by. How has this affected your thoughts? Brought anything new to mind? Okay, so you've taken a break, and let the idea and stress of the article go for a while... what next, if you're still stumped. Well, has anything humorous or outright f-ed up happened to you recently? Remember, you'll write a whole lot better if it happens to be something you're passionate about, and if it's something that most people go through, then more of your readers will relate to it. How about current events? Our world's in a pretty messed up state these days. And guess what? Someone's gotta' fix it. Take a look at a couple of major news stories circulating, and then think how would you (or your generation) prevented that if you were in problem-- or what are you going to have to do fix it. Leadership and inspiration. If you can fill your readers with the inspiration that will let them see the power that is in them. Hope, faith, belief--there is no limit to what a person, let alone a group of united people can do. I think I've given a million ideas your way, but the best way in the world to write (at least to start) is to grab a pen and notebook, and just write. Write the thoughts that come to mind and keep going. Do this for twenty or thirty minutes straight... and then keep going. It will write itself, if you just kick that censor that's in your head in the balls, and then go with it. You know you can. Stop doubting. (Put it in your own words--and you have your article already written for you.) --Peace, David A. Reedy... vox populi.

I read that when writers encounter writer's block, still keep writing just about anything that comes into your mind and don't let the days past without writing anything. The act of writing will tickle your mind and ideas will soon come. Just keep writing that's a tip I got from reading tips and it worked for me.

i think that you should keep reading up on discussions here on mylot, especially the ones that are getting the most responces because those are obviously the ones of the interest to the people. sooner or later youll find a topic that you can relate to and come up with many ideas. i myself have the typical dillema of writers block alot and cant stand it. i always feel so darn stupid when i cant think of what to write next:(

This is from a professional writing course. I am a published writer in several medias and it is one of the methods I use. The 5Ws and H method. When you begin try to forget you are trying to write a whole piece. The 5Ws and H Method helps you break it down. One of the causes of writer's block it looking ahead to what you have to accomplish instead of just starting with one part of the project. The First W: What What is my topic What do I know about it What do I have to say about what I know The Second W: Who Who are my readers Who will benefit from what I have to say The Third W: Why Why is it important that I write about this topic. Why do my readers need to hear what I have to say The Fourth W: Where Where does my inspiration come from Where does my information come from The Fifth W: When When will I find time to write this When is my target date The H: How? How will i make and organize my piece Now I've modified the process for you. Take it a line at a time. When you go cold just take a section of your resource material read and rewrite it as if you were trying to explain it to a friend. When you've done this process and go to organized it, it will be like pieces of a puzzle only you can make fit.

Lack of ideas is not what a writer should be saying but he should know ho to overcome. It can be easy overcome by asking your frnds questions like "hey whats missing in our collge, whats hot today mate, Hi y the boredom, what we missed dude tell me, can't pl keep these things write?, What will read now dude, whats better man to go reading davinci or a studybibble or a book on chicks' People mate are where u will get the ideas from the more u analyse this the more u will have ideas.
