Why do we sing in a higher voice than we talk with ...

It's really odd .. whenever I hear folks bursting into song invariably they sing in a higher voice than they would normally talk with ... Go on .. just try it ... tra la la la dee dee dah ... bet you sung higher didn't you ... why on earth do we do that, surely unless we have a trained singing voice you'd think we'd sing in the same voice as we talk with ...

I never thought of it before but I just tried it and its true lol ( felt a bit daft but what the hell lol ) xx

I always try to sing in a low voice so nobody can hear me! lol

It must have something to do with using your larynx to speak and your chest to sing. You breath differently when you sing than when you speak too. Different functions of the body calls for different tomes.
