This is a tradition for us here in the deep south of America. We always eat black-eyed peas and hog jowls (or just ham) on New Years day for good luck. The history behind this is the hog and its meat is considered good luck because it symbolizes prosperity. What do you eat on New Years day for luck?

When I was in the USA I sometimes ate black-eyed peas and hog jowls on New Years, but it was usually when I was visiting someone that made it. I remember being up north and the people there said they didn't eat black-eyed peas; they said they fed that to their farm animals. They seemed a little surprised that I liked black-eyed peas. Here in Nicaragua the traditional New Years food is a kind of dessert called Sopa Boracha that translates as "Drunk Soup." I have never eaten it.

Black Eye Peas - peas
I eat black eye peas but not the hog. I season my peas with smoked turkey. I definently eat it out of tradition for luck. I have always eaten Collard greens or Cabbage for money. They are to seasoned with smoked turkey wings. I usually cook fried chicken and fried pork chops as my main meat with this meal.

Yea, I'm from the south so that's what I'll be eating. But I always heard you needed something green in order to have money all year. I guess it doesn't hurt to try anyway.

I am way late with this response, however black-eyed peas and rice is a must. I have always gathered together on the eve of the new year with my family waiting together for the approaching new year,I hope we continue to do this, even after they have moved into homes of their own. Another tradition and what is considered good luck is by only allowing a 'man' to be the first to enter your home in the new year...gosh where do these traditions come from...SS

We usually have black eye peas but this year I was sick and didn't cook. My husband usually wants the blackeye peas for New Years. When I was growing up we had blackeye peas pretty much every day. I still like them whether its New Year's or not.
