Safer air travel ...

I was watching some footage of equipment being dropped to soldiers in the field of action on TV the other day ... they were dropping all sorts of equipment from food stores, to tents and even jeeps and tanks ...
And I got to wondering .. if they can attach a parachute to a heavy tank and it lands safely without breaking .. why don't they use the same idea to make a safety parachute for small aircraft ... I suppose you'd still land with one heck of a thump .. but perhaps it would help to save lives ...

That's absolutely amazing, dropping a tank from a great height with just the aid of a parachute! Taking an umbrella out with me won't be much use then! Seriously tho I agree it would safe lives if you could do it with small aircraft too. What I used to wonder as a kid is why they don't supply parachutes to every passenger who flies? They provide lifebelts if you fall into the sea, but if you are not over the ocean, then you are rather stuck! I wonder if they now allow you to take parachutes through customs!
