Flippin' norah, I just sneezed about 5 times running .. near knocked me off my feet hahahaha!! But why did I close my eyes each time I sneezed .. surely we blink when things are hurtling towards our eyes .. not hurtling away from them as with a 'snotty' sneeze ... It seems a very odd thing to happen ... do you close your eyes when you sneeze or is it just me ??

Yes, I have heard that as well, I can imagine holding my eyes open whilst I sneezed and suddenly my eyeballs shoot out and land on someones dinner plate! Plus there's the rhyme isn't there: Once a wish Twice a kiss Three times a letter Four times something better Five times and it's the docs for you my dear! (PS I made the fifth one up, I would love to know what the fifth saying is!) I'll send you some mansize ;0)

I couldn't find any saying specifically for a fifth sneeze .. presumably by then everyone has run away thinking you have the plague ... But I did find this ... which may be what you were thinking of ... Sneeze on Monday for health, Sneeze on Tuesday for wealth, Sneeze on Wednesday for a letter, Sneeze on Thursday for something better, Sneeze on Friday for sorrow, Sneeze on Saturday, see your sweetheart tomorrow, Sneeze on Sunday, safety seek.

I once asked a docter this and he said we close our eyes to protect the tear ducts and blood vessels from bacteria expelled in the sneeze. Did you know that Thomas Edison came up with the idea of movies from watching someone sneeze in 1888? He was looking at still sequential pictures of someone sneezing, and realized that if you viewed them quickly in a sequence, that you might be able to make a movie. http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trr018.html And In Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia and some Middle Eastern countries a sneeze that occurs after making a statement is sometimes interpreted as a confirmation by God that the statement was true. There you learn something new each day! lol
