Is there a good way to trace your lineage?

I want to know more about my heritage. the thing is I only know my great great grandmothers name who is Indian. Her daughter, my great grandmother knew little about her since she died when she was very young. I don't even know if there is a birth certificate or anything on her. Where should I start looking to find some answers and trace my family roots?
