Is 15th day of the month of an significance in the US?

I am not a US resident but I have participated in a number of competitions there, such as poetry competition whereby awards of prizes and payment dates reflect 15th. And even up till now pay out date of most poetry organizations is 15th of every month, same with MYLOT.

Most companies pay their employees on the last day of the month & the 15th. Most commissions are paid out on the 15th of every month.
