I recently did a paper for my COM 125 class on the topic of workpklace privacy. First let me say that I was opposed to what I viewed as snooping in the workplace after working for a short stent at time warner cable. During the course of my research paper however I decided that an employers need to know what is going on and protecting themselves from liability far outweighs the right to privacy for the individual. Aside from the fact that the law only protects personal privacy rights in your home or on your property.
Furthermore there has never been a significant ruling in favor of an employee's right to privacy in any court in the country!

I do feel that we deserve and should be able to have some privacy in the workplace. This is a very good and tough question to answer. I know personally that I would like privacy and not have my coworkers go through my desk when I am not there, unless I tell them it is okay or if they are looking for something that is work related.

yes you would like them to respect your space of course and if your employer has no suspicions or reasons to be searching through your desk then that is a violation of your privacy. However by the same token don't keep questionable objects in your desk because someone could see them and report your at any time giving them reason to be going through your desk.
