I think it would depend on the child themself.. What do they like to listen too.. what are there interest in what seems important to them.. I would start their and then find a book.. I enjoy reading however my son refused too for the longest time. But I found out that was only because what I enjoyed to read was not even close to his interest..

Have you introduced them to your local library? It's really a great learning experience. Kids learn all kinds of things by participating. They can get a library card and learn about responsibility. Usually librarians are happy to give little ones a tour and show them how to find books they like. My library has story time on Saturday mornings. All the kids sit and listen to a story and then they talk about what book they read. When all is done they look around for their next book to read so they can share about it the following week.
We started my nephew at the library when he was 5. He will be 8 next week and reads at a 5th grade level. It really puts the fun into reading.
He now has his own "Library" and he and his friends exchange books.

I don't know, but I'm about ready to pull my hair out trying to get my kids to read (ages 5, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 13..the others do read)!!!! I will read to them to have them joke around, laugh and be annoying until I eventually have to stop. I've tried sitting down and having them read to me, but I just end up reading it to them. It's so frustrating. I've tried to explain to them how important it is to learn young, because if they don't, it will be very much harder to learn later. It's just so frustrating!!!
I've also heard of Hooked on Phonics, but heard that it was kinda pricey. I've found that with my 5 year old~he likes computer games and such that he can interact with rather than a plain ole book.
If you try it with success, please let me know!!!! Good Luck! Wish I could of been more help!
