Wi-Fi Connections in cars?

Autonet Mobile has a device which will create a mobile wi-fi hotspot and Avis Rent-a-car plans to make it available in their vehicles. They claim it is for "passenger use" only BUT they will be requiring renters to sign an agreement not to hold Avis responsible for any accidents resulting from the use of this device. The cost for the device is $399 plus $49 a month for service and Avis expects to charge an extra $10.95 a day to cover those costs. As if cell phones were not a big enough problem now the internet will be available as you drive around. I think this is the #1 dumb idea for 2007 and we are only 2 days into the new year.

Personally, I am always distracted trying to figure out where everything is in a new car for the first day or two. For me this would just be one more distraction and distractions can cause accidents. If they really want to put something good in a rental; they should put a small frig in; then, you could pop in a few snacks and a couple of soft drinks when you have a lot of driving to do and you wouldn't need to make extra stops for thirst and hunger.
