I always use a pattern. . . I like butterick or simplicity patterns best. . .i don't like McCall's because every time I use one, the pattern doesn't work out properly and i end up improvising the whole outfit, which is frustrating

I do usually start out with a pattern ,but then I usually alter it and then throw it to the side and go from there. I just use the pattern as a starting point or idea .

I have never used a pattern, I tried once, looked at it and said what the heck is all this junk? All the "intructions" telling me to do crazy stuff, so I said to heck with that, and if I need an outline or something I use a piece of clothing or what not similar to what I am making, so far it has worked pretty well for getting the correct sizes for my son's pj pants, and dresses for my daughter. I mainly make quilts and blankets though, so there's really no need for a pattern there. :)

I do sometimes, and sometimes I make changes. I prefer patterns for clothing, but for crafts I create my own.

Funny you should ask! I am trying to sew up a stuffed zebra, I did by altering a existing donkey pattern I have -- and I am just beginning to say hey you know I bet I could draw out patterns for stuffed toys. but I don't think I could ever be as creative as my mom was - she would just get some newsprint and sew up a dress, skirt, or whatever. But this year I feeling pretty adventurous -- it just the budget won't allow for much experimentation :)!

I do both. I find that it is hard to find patterns with everything taht I want in the pattern. I tweak it here and there until it is the way I want it. I also completely make my own patterns from newspapers. I can look at a pattern and usually figure out how to make it myself. I love to sew and have been sewing since I was a child. I taught both my daughters to sew but they tend to stay with patterns. I hope they teach this skill to my Grandchildren too. I think sewing is beginning to be a lost art.

Most of the time I use a basic pattern to make the things I really want. I will switch around sleeves, bodices, etc., to create new looks. Unfortunately, that only works with patterns of the same company at times

Sometimes I use a pattern, sometimes I make my own pattern and sometimes there's no need for a pattern at all. It all depends.

I use patterns when I sew and yes I sometimes add or take away things from them. Or I might like a pocket on a particular pattern and will use in on another pattern.

It depends on what I'm sewing if I use a pattern or not. For apparel sewing, yes, I do. But, I'm not afraid to mix and match, add embellisments to it or whatever. I just need the basic shape. Especially when making things for my kids. Lately, I've been creating my own patterns for fleece blankets. Not the tied edges ones, but ones that are more quilty like. They are cut into pieces then sewn--rag like-- to make shapes. So far I've made bears, fish, flowers and I'm currently working on a butterfly. My 7 year old is a major contributor to these works.

Sometimes. It depends on what I'm sewing. Since I'm just a beginner, I started out using the pattern to the 'T'. But I've been getting brave enough lately to make changes.
