Why do seemingly intelligent people fall for the lies of televangelists?

I recently saw that Jim Baker is back in business again. His website includes all sorts of crap you can buy. He has a lovely new wife replacing Tammy Faye. How can otherwise intelligent people send money to these televangelists? They are nothing but con men and scammers, yet, they get millions, and millions every year. I don't get it.

People get caught up in the emotions, and are not letting God guide their judgement.

This is really difficult to understand too. My guess is maybe some of their needs spiritually or emotionally are met (or at least they think are answered). Or perhaps, this is an act of indulgence for them. They acknowledge that they have done something wrong and this is one way that they could be forgiven or balance their evil deeds.

I think it must be because these people are looking for answers and need something, they may be afraid and find safe with these people.
