Hardwood flooring and humidity

HI
We have just had prefinished hardwood flooring put onto our main floor. We live in Burnaby, BC, Canada, which is a rainforest.
We were told that we needed to keep the humidity in the house at normal levels (around 50%). Yesterday morning when I came down, the humidity was at 75%. I looked at the humidity levels over the course of the day online, and it fluctuates anywhere between 50 and 90%. I am not keen to live with our windows closed all the time - for one thing we would bake to death. How seriously do we need to take this humidity thing? IF it fluctuates over the course of a day, is it going to affect the hardwood?
Any advice appreciated.
