What is your opinion on Electoral Votes vs Counting Every Individual Vote?

I believe that Electoral Voting should be banned. If the state is small the vote counts for so little. The larger the state, the more electoral votes. Why? Every vote should count and the votes should be counted individually.

I think that you should count every individual vote. not by electoral vote. it just is not right.

You seem to be getting off trace somewhat. All votes are counted but not all votes count.

AMEN! i've never understood the whole electoral college thing.. it always made me sort of feel like sometimes my vote really doesnt count. I bet if they did count all votes individually that we would see a rise in more people voting, what do you think?

I know that some smaller states have been nearly unanimous in the votes that were casted during the presidential elections and because of the size of the state there was only 1 vote cast. If each individual vote were counted, the election would have gone a different path.

I agree that more people would be out there voting. Too often I have heard "why bother".

I think the popular vote should win. After all, it is a system of who gets the MOST votes. The electoral college is not fair because when I voted for Al Gore my vote was not counted because my state went with Bush.

voting - out right and if you don't vote then you should not complain, well maybe you should since our choices are not what we deserve, amybody good is too concerned about exposing themselves to politics
Every vote does count just the majority makes the final vote what it is for the state. Kinda like the pay system here that crawls through and awards the final evalutation. Voting should be a bit easier. If they can do absentee ballots why not all the ballots be done that way. Would help some of us that have crazy schedules.

I agree the each vote should be counted. Yeah it will take longer to get the actual vote count in but I think this would be better. Like you said small states have few electoral votes but the people voting in that state voting is just as important as someone voting in a larger state. Unfortantely I don't see it changing anytime soon. But state elctions aren't done by electoral votes so the national elections that are bigger shouldn't be done that way either. Just my 2 cents worth.

It won't take any longer because all votes are counted now. The problem arises after all the votes are in. I copied and pasted the following to perhaps clear up a few uncertainty in your minds. In the Federalist Papers (No. 68), Alexander Hamilton refers to the process of selecting the Executive, and refers to "the people of each State (who) shall choose a number of persons as electors," but he does not use the term "electoral college." Who selects the Electors? The process for selecting electors varies throughout the United States. Generally, the political parties nominate electors at their State party conventions or by a vote of the party's central committee in each State. Electors are often selected to recognize their service and dedication to their political party. They may be State elected officials, party leaders, or persons who have a personal or political affiliation with the Presidential candidate. Then the voters in each State choose the electors on the day of the general election. The electors' names may or may not appear on the ballot below the name of the candidates running for President, depending on the procedure in each State. Is my vote for President and Vice President meaningful in the Electoral College system? Yes, within your State your vote has a great deal of significance. Under the Electoral College system, we do not elect the President and Vice President through a direct nation-wide vote. The Presidential election is decided by the combined results of 51 State elections (in this context, the term "State" includes DC). It is possible that an elector could ignore the results of the popular vote, but that occurs very rarely. Your vote helps decide which candidate receives your State's electoral votes. I pasted this because it might be helpful for you understand how the electoral college was perceived and carried out. It doesn't change my opinion that it should be abolished. It was obviously written by a bunch of lawyers as one can never understand any thing they write.

Guess I didn't use the right subject for my post on this subject yesterday. Well, because of the internet my position is that the electoral college is out of date and should be abolished. It would behoove the govt to install polling places with special computers in all 48 continuental states, Hawaii and Alaska. While the cost would be horrendous I believe that the means would justiy the ends. One possible obstacle would be that of the absentee ballots but I'm sure a reasonable solution might be found giving a deadline perhaps one or two weeks in advance. I don't feel that it should be an individual state thing but a national obligation. It would also eliminated the various ways that votes are cast today by having one system only.

I agree with you totally. I feel like my vote means nothing, but I do it anyway. They really need to get rid of it and go by the majority of votes for the country as a whole, definitely.

No Way...then people like Hillary and Pelosi are going to just make BIG promises of hand-outs in large populated cites like New York and LA... and forget about the rest of the country. Like they tried to do with the "free" kid's healthcare (they try to make anyone under 25 a child hahaha) and families with combined income of 82,000 a year as poor, what a scam, giving away freebies to buy their votes, like they do now. States rights rule over the federal government and thats why there is an Electoral College in the first place.

I remember learning about Electoral Voting in Junior High and at that time I thought the concept was stupid. I told everybody I knew who brought the subject of voting up; until that is, I realized that politics was one of the few topics you really don't want to talk about much with people. LOL Then and now, I still think they should get rid of them as well. Let each person's vote count for something, please.

I totally agree it should be banned. Thanks for posting a topic where I didn't have to defend banning it tooth and nail ;) Every vote should count in a true democracy!
