Caffeine Dependencies: Do you have one? How do you get your fix?

I made it one of my New Years resolutions to cut back on Caffeine. I won't give it up completely, but I have managed to go without it for a week (I started early) and I actually feel better because of it. So many people think they need caffeine in order to make it through the day, my fiance even gets a headache if he doesn't have caffeine for a day! So I'm here to discuss the phenomenon. Do you feel the need to have caffeine everyday? If so, what do you drink? Tea? Coffee? Soda? Chocolate has caffeine too! Do you actually feel better after having your "fix" or do you feel worse in the long run? I find that with caffeine I feel energized for a few hours, but then I get tired really quickly. However when I go without it and instead drink water or juice, I feel energized all day. Let's discuss and hopefully a few of you will drop your dependency on caffeine!!

I have it real bad for tea. I don't feel bad because I figure it is a whole lot better than over the counter medication for trying to go to sleep. The doctors gave me some sleeping pills but I don't take it! I did cut back on the cappaccinos though.

It's weird that tea can help you sleep even though it has caffeine. Cappaccinos had that affect on me at one time, I was sleepy instantly because of the warmth. However, I wouldn't be able to sleep b/c of the caffeine! Now I don't get that initial sleepy feeling with cappaccinos b/c I've had enough over the years. Luckily those are expensive! so I only have them once ever few months.

I am a recovering addict. I used to have to have a Pepsi every morning as soon as I woke up, and would maybe have one or two more throughout the day. Snacking on chocolate was also not uncommon for me. I still have an occasional Pepsi and a bit of chocolate every now and then, but giving up the Caffeine not only helped to stabilize my ups and downs, but I also lost 35 pounds in the process!

Yeah one thing I've never been able to do is have soda first thing in the morning. Except if I was really tired when I got to work I would get a mountain dew! The funny thing about chocolate is that I don't even care for regular chocolate that much (unless it's filled with something) but I snack on it a lot. I've been trying to give it up b/c I think the caffiene was the reason I ate it! I am hoping that cutting back on caffiene will help me keep thin and happy too! I get tired and cranky after I've had too much of it, so I agree it can be a downer. Thanks for commenting and good job on cutting back :)

I think it's the same for me. I don't think I ate the chocolate so much for the taste as I did for the caffeine. It made me feel good, at least for a while. I feel better now though, because I rarely eat it at all and mostly stick to flavored waters instead of sugary, caffeinated drinks.

I only drink one cup of coffee in the morning to wake me up, and thats it for the day. I drink water all day it is much better and as you mentioned it will give some energy if you drink enough of it. Good job on cutting back.

Good job on controlling yourself too! I know ppl who have 2-3 cups of coffee before lunch... then more before they leave work. These people are seriously missing the point of coffee. It's not meant to keep you up all day, although it may help with that morning wake up.

I probably am pretty much a caffeine-dependent. I've been drinking coffee and Coca-Cola since I was a wee lad, and I love eating chocolate once a day. So for me, at age 43, it would be hard to just go "cold turkey" and not ingest any caffeine at all. I am, though, willing to reduce my consumption.

Well I didn't go cold turkey b/c I like the taste of iced tea and soda too much :) i'm actually having my first iced tea in over a week at this very minute! However, I'm trying to teach myself to drink it because I want the TASTE and not because I want to stay awake. I encourage you and everyone here to cut back a little though :) It's amazing how good you feel when you replace just one caffeine drink a day with a bottle of water! Good luck!

Hi, my name is Ryan and I have a caffeine addiction. I am big time into Diet pops and iced tea, needing (or at least thinking I do) to drink one or more of them every day. I always feel better after having had my fix for the day, so it is just something I keep coming back to. Speaking of that... where did that Diet Pepsi go?

I think that's my fiance's problem also! He has more than 1 soda a day on most days so the "high" never goes away. If you take a break from the soda though, you are gonna feel blah really quickly. I have convinced my fiance to have water whenever he can, and he is cutting back on the soda, but so far he can't let go of that diet mountain dew! Sure it's diet, but boy does that have a lot of caffeine. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE caffeine when it is just for fun, like that "Live Wire" Mountain Dew! Woo hoo I love that :) But I don't drink it every day, only when I just want to be energized, and mostly b/c I'm out doing something fun :)

"Hiiiiiiiiiiiiii Ryan" LOL, sorry, I couldn't resist... lots of people could use a step program when it comes to caffeine, I'm sure! I hear you on the diet pop/soda. I had to seriously cut back because I was drinking that stuff instead of eating. Last night with dinner I had a small glass of the newer Diet Pepsi with Lime. *blush* Now I feel guilty LOL!

I need my caffeine, and I know how sad that sounds! I can't get through the day without a Coke or Mountain dew. If I go all day without it I feel like crap, and I get headaches and even find myself getting cranky. I just feel better if I have at least one a day around lunch and one at night. The way I see it, I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't really have any bad habits, so to say, so what harm will a few sodas do?

no harm at all, just keep it in moderation ;) One summer, I had a Live Wire mountain Dew slurpee every day! Well everyday I could find a store selling them :) Yum! and woo hoo was I energetic that summer! But I cut back over the winter where false energy is just defeated by the cold weather.

I try to cut back, but it never works, here lately I've been trying to drink water at work, but yuck!!! Maybe one day I will get the strength to quit :)

Oh yes, yes, yes!!!!!! I get my caffeine hit from good old diet cola and I am useless without it. Pretty irritable too lol. I do drink the regulation eight glasses of water and I drink tea, hot chocolate (nearly as good as diet cola, but not quite!)and squash, but nothing helps me through a heavy work load more effectively. Drop my dependency? I doubt it, I enjoy it far too much and a gal has to have a few vices lol.

I used to drink tons of strong coffee every day until I found out a couple of facts; 1) Caffeine can actually stunt your growth. This is because the caffeine actually slows down the growth hormone in your body - also why some people can end up becoming ill or end up with bad skin. 2) If you drink too much caffeine (more than 20 mugs of strong coffee a day - about 1,300mg of caffeine) and you give up, the withdrawals can be so bad you can end up in hospital from the effects. I gave up caffeine once in one go and I was ill for about a month then one day I just started drinking it again and I was fine. I found after that, that when I wanted to cut it down I went onto half-caffeine coffee and now I only drink caffeine free coffee. I used to think that coffee never affected me (as someone else mentioned, I was also able to get asleep after a coffee) but since coming off caffeine all together, I realised how much it did actually affect me! I don't drink coke, unless caffeine free which I don't like the taste of or eat chocolate.

Hmmm... well I'm not sure about stunting growth b/c my fiance is 6'2"! That's pretty dang tall. I can't imagine anyone drinking 20 cups of coffee a day. My fiance drinks at most 3 cups of coffee/soda, and when I did drink it I had about 16oz of iced tea and one soda a day. Even when we drink caffeine, we try to also have water that day so at least we weren't ONLY drinking caffeine.

Yeah some people can handle drinking it off and on with no real problems, but then there's people like me who start to get addicted quickly! I think the pick-me-up is hard to give up, but the tiredness I would feel is easy to give up :)

I used to have to have at least one cup of coffee every morning or I thought I could not function. However, like you, once I gave it up what I found was that I actually had more energy instead of dragging. It was hard the first week or two though, I did get headaches for the first few days. I have quit my caffee dependency for about 3 years now, but strangely enough, I have been craving coffee like crazy this past month.

Funny that you have the craving all of a sudden! Maybe you should try decaf so you can get the taste, and maybe trick yourself into thinking it's caffeine :) That is what I do with soda, drink caffeine free and I feel better as if I had the caffeine I wanted.

I recommend green tea, which has a lower level of caffein than coffee, as a substitute of coffee. It not only reduce your caffein intake gradually, but also our body benefits from the antioxidant compounds in green tea. =)

Thanks for the recommendation, but I actually don't even like the taste of green tea :P I don't like the taste of regular tea either - only Iced Tea :)

No, I'm not addicted. I drink caffeinated all the time, but I can go without it and not go through any withdrawals. Usually I don't drink it to wake up, I drink it just cuz it's in drinks I like. Only when I am very light on sleep does it become something I use to wake me up - and by light on sleep, I mean less than four hours.

I think that's the big difference I'm noticing in this discussion. People who are addicted are drinking it to wake up, people who are not addicted are drinking it just b/c they like it. I used to drink a lot of iced tea b/c I love the taste, and never had issues... it was when I started drinking it as a pick me up that I started to get addicted.

I loooooooove chocolate in any shape or form. That is my biggest caffeine addiction. I am not a coffee drinker. I drink 2 cups of green tea every day, but I don't think there is much caffeine in green tea.

I don't love chocolate but I'm still addicted! I prefer fruity candies, or chocolate with stuff in it, yet at work when the chocolate bowl is always full I can hardly ever stay away! I think sometimes it does give me a little kick, but then I'm tired just like with drinking coffee. Plus chocolate is fattening! So I've been trying to avoid that more than anything. I guess I'd rather have a highly caffeinated ice tea than chocolate.

Well, about a few weeks ago I tried to give up caffine as well but that only lasted for a while and then I missed the rush that I used to have when drinking caffine. I guess there is this certain stereotype that a person has while drinking coffee that it makes them more intelligent or more busy because they're drinking coffee lol. I don't know if that makes much sense, but I drink coffee about once a day if I get time. So sorry I can't help to promote less caffine drinking, but hopefully everyone else will have a better shot at it!

I know at my college it was like you were trendy if you drank coffee, which I didn't. So I did start to get hooked on cappucino when my friend talked me into trying it - you do feel like part of the hip crowd! I think it also makes you feel more important b/c "i am so important I need to force myself to stay awake longer!!" haha

I'm pretty sure I have a caffeine dependency because if I don't have any coffee in the morning I'll have a headache by the afternoon. I started drinking coffee as a teen just because I love the taste and now I still love the taste, but I drink at least one cup a day just to stave off a headache. I try not to drink soda or other caffeinated drinks, just coffee and sometimes tea. I'm not a big chocolate fan so I have no problems with that. You feel energized after drinking caffiene because it's a stimulant, but it's false energy (unlike juice)so it only lasts for a short while.

Yep that's the point I am trying to make, caffeine may jolt you awake, but it doesn't last! I personally love iced tea and didn't even know until two years ago that tea had cafeinne in it! I would drink it daily, 3-4 cups! Of course, I also added sugar so I had a high for quite awhile. But in the last year or so, I found myself so addicted that if I didn't have iced tea I couldn't wake up at work. Finally I decided to drop it, and now I only drink water, juice, or non-caffinated sodas most of the time. I don't mind sugary drinks either (like fruit punch) b/c I can handle sugar :) It's the caffeine that was a little too much for me.

I did try to give up caffeine and went through a period of about 6 weeks where I didn't drink coffee. But I was miserable throughout! I now drink coffee first thing in the morning, but limit the number of cups I have to two, and never drink coffeee after lunch onwards. I feel this is a healthy balance. I get t enjoy coffee but don't overdo it.

It's a funny thing the only hot drink I have is coffee .. Yet I never get any 'withdrawal' symptoms if I suddenly stop drinking it .. and it makes no difference whether I buy decaff or regular .. I just love the taste of coffee .. but I don't get any 'buzz' from it .. or feel energised ... I just enjoy supping coffee

I am laughing because I read your question about "what do you drink?" and my answers are yes, yes, yes and yes on the chocolate once in awhile too. I'm terrible about caffeine and I shouldn't be because of my high blood pressure! I have cut back on the tea and coffee and am replacing most sodas with water lately and I do feel good for doing that. However, the weird thing with me is that I seem to be very unaffected by caffeine. It doesn't "wake me up" or keep me awake. I can drink coffee at 2AM and still sleep just fine. My mom used to be like your fiance. She was addicted to caffeine in a serious way and would get the worst headaches if she didn't have her coffee. Even if we were out shopping or what have you, we always had to stop at some point for her to have coffee. I used to get frustrated because, even though I could (and did!) drink the same amount as she did, I never craved it, felt the "need" to have it or had any headaches or anything if I didn't get it. Really weird how people can react so differently to the same things.

I responded a long comment than got "page not displayed" so I'll shorten it for you :) It is weird how different people can be but it does make sense. I didn't even have a coffee/cappucino until college so that definitely gave me a lot of energy! I only have cappucinos once a month, or less. I do drink iced tea a lot and that has a great effect on me, but it wears off quick making me sleepy shortly after - so that's why I'm avoiding it as much as I can from now on :)

Yes, I love coffee... and right now, I'm having it... I feel recharged after having one but I'm not addicted to it.. what only takes not to be addictive on something is discipline, always put on your mind that too much is worst. By this thinking I was able to balance my diet.

No I don't I hate the taste of coffee and harldy drink softdrinks that contain caffeine. I do drink tea sometimes, but not that often. Maybe once a week or so. I mostly drink water! Nice and cheap. Plus it really helps when your thirsty instead of making you crave for more, like most sugary drinks do. I do know some people who really 'need' their coffee.
