There are countless great small dogs out there being put down every day because for whatever reason their first owner has decided to abandon them in a shelter. If you picked your breed, you could find a breed specific rescue, or you could go to a general rescue and pick up a dog. The no-kill all volunteer rescues tend to work on a foster home situation, so the dogs are usually housebroken and have manners. I caution you about some of the smaller breeds of terrier for a home with a cat, although it is possible to make it work. Terriers were bred to chase and kill vermin, and sometimes a dog's defintion of vermin and our own differ tragically. This isn't to say that a chihuahua (for example) couldn't be cat aggressive. I'd ask you to consider the more aged dogs. Dogs who've had owners pass away or who were used for breeding stock until they got too old. These dogs are often purebred and gorgeous dogs who have never experienced a couch cuddle or a pig's ear... only one litter after the next in a puppy mill... those dogs are often put down because everyone wants a puppy. You could be saving a life while satisfying your desire for a dog. Thank you if that's the route you choose. Good Luck!

I suppose if you really wanted a dog you might consider going to your local pound and adopting. It's inexpensive. You could also go to a local pet rescue. I hardly think you are serious if you are looking for a dog on an international forum.
