I always buy my kids educational toys and I was wondering if you all thought that they realy work or is it just a waste of my money?

Sometimes kids just need to have fun...educational toys are usually a pretty good deal, but kids need toys that require them to use their imaginations also.
The sing Elmo teaching the alphabet is fine, but what's wrong with blocks? Most of them have a picture of an object beginning with the letter on the opposite side, children can build with them, line them up to show the letters in different sounds...s-h vs t-h for example.
Children need interaction with adults and other kids also when learning, not just mechanical toys that make sounds.
After all a person blind from birth knows the words red, blue, green...but knowing the words doesn't mean they know what the words represent. Sad fact kids.
Knowing the alphabet without knowing what it does is just making sounds.

Working as a teacher, I know one of the best ways of learning is by play. Cubs learn by play, We play, some of us adults still play! Kids have a vivid imagination and curiosity(This is one of things that separates us from children not age!), it has to be fired up. Educational toys are wonderful provided they are not obviously contrived by adults. Children will soon interest. I think the child has to relate to the toy in question, they will probably find a new use for it very soon if they like it. A toy on its own will have only limited value if we don't use it as excuse for other activities. "Lets see how high we can build the blocks!" A bit of bonding between the parent and child. " "My blocks are higher than yours!" Competition. Playing could be considered as a rehearsal for life - or just fun! Or a mix of both

I think some are a waste of time, but some really do expand the kids minds and help them learn and develope motor skills.

Actually such toys helps to keep the child busy. It is good for mom. Mom can work keeping the child busy on toys. The child is educated a little bit only. It is also good pastime. It is not a waste of money, if child is really benefited by such toys.

Educational toys work. My 16 month old can recite his alphabet from a-z and count to 10 thanks to leapfrog's Learning Leap and Learning driver. He's also learning to build short 3 letter words thanks to their fridge phonic system, so, yes, they do work. I often hear from playing with the toys and repeating what they say while I'm busy with something else. He loves his educational toys more than any of the others and research has shown that children who "work" at play are happier and more intelligent than those who don't.
