We are new to rats as pets. My son just got a female rat about a month ago. I never had a rat before either but I had talked to a couple people who had them. We went into a local pet store with the idea of getting some new fish. They had her sitting in a cage by herself near the fish area with a sign, "free to good home". Someone had brought her back. My son begged to take her home. One of the benefits I have noticed is that they aren't as skittish as some other small rodents. They seem more confident when exploring outside of their cage. She does seem very intelligent which makes for more interesting interaction for a younger child. He likes to provide challenges (safe - like new toys, etc) and see if she can figure things out. She usually does. We're still learning about her but by the way she responds to different things, I think she's got us already all figured out.

I've seen two rat related educational TV programs recently. One showed how a rat learned to open the refrigerator door. Another showed how they are being trained and used to find land mines. They are actually quicker and easier to train for this than dogs, plus they are too lightweight to set off the explosives. Don't try this at home though. hehe. I read that they like to climb up ropes. The thick kind with knots. We haven't tried this yet. Need to go buy that type of rope. The other day, my son was playing with his. She was on his shoulder and he put his arm out straight. She tightrope walked to the end of his hand - so balanced and sure of herself. Then you could see her trying to figure out where she should go - jump to his bed, computer desk, etc.? I faced him and overlapped our hands so we formed a sort of circle. She came across onto my arm, to my shoulder, across the back of my neck, down the other arm, across his arm, should neck, and around and around. She had a blast and it was hilarious!

Yea my rat does that arm thing. I just walk around with my rat on my shoulders. She is pretty well trained like that, and doesn't run off. I have two dogs, and she is actually interested in them, while they are afraid =P but the only thing other than that arm thing, is that she can jump from my bed to her cage, and viseversa, and she can climb her way and and down my shirt when im sitting up. I also go her to go on her hind legs, and take food from my hands, but I think that is just normal.

I haven't had rats as pets but my husband did. I just couldn't do it. They are carriers of disease and such.

not the ones you have as pets. If you watch them, they are one of the cleaner animals. They are like cats, they clean themselves about 3 times a day. Well atleast that what I see my rat do.

I've only had my 2 girls for 5 months and had never had rats before but I wanted them so badly as I had heard so many great things about them. One of the best things about rats is they are so friendly and intelligent. My girls know when I need a little extra affection and start doing crazy stuff (like flicking water at my husband) and bruxing and boggling at me (this is a sign of affection so I'm told). The girls are also very clean, can be easily toilet trained and as others have said they are confident with people.

because when people think of rats, they think of the big smelly sewer rats, and not the cool ones that most have as pets.
