How effective is the United Nations?

With everything that is happening in the world (from conflicts to the environment to human rights, etc...), how effective do you feel the United Nations has been to solving, preventing, (or improving) issues? I for one believe that the UN needs more teeth to get things done or else the big countries will keep making all the decisions. And as I mentioned in a previous post, I think that the big countries will only push for their own agendas... which are never harmonious with each other. So what do you think? How effective is the United Nations? (please keep this thread clean of insults guys, everyone is entitled their own opinions).
