does weight training has any adverse effect on health????

my grandparents always ask me not to go to the gym as they feel that lifting heavy weights will have an adverse effect on my health. according to them, i may have bulging biceps now but afterwards that is going to adversely affect my health... what do u say guys??? coz i want to have a good physique for a better personality but i dont want to hamper my health... what to do.. plz help

I think they're wrong. Weight lifting is great exercise! But it's more than simply moving heavy things around. It's important to keep good form and work up gradually, rather than just fling yourself into using free weights. I'd look at some weight lifting websites for good techniques (I really like www.stumptuous.com). Or, if you're interested and can afford it, I have always gotten a lot of value out of a session or two with a personal trainer. Also, lifting weights will not help your personality. That's a different matter entirely! :)
